What Is Welding?

Welding is a fabrication process that uses high temperatures to melt and fuse metal parts together. The process of welding doesn’t merely bond the two pieces together as in brazing or soldering, instead, it causes the metallic structures of the two pieces to join together to become one through the use of extreme heat and sometimes with the aid of other metals or gasses.

Welding usually involves the use of something called a filler material, or a consumable. This is used to provide a filler or “pool” of molten material that helps facilitate the formation of a strong link between base materials.

Most welding processes will also require some form of shielding to protect both the main components and filler from being oxidized during the process.

What Types Of Welding Do We Specialize In?

CT Custom Coatings & Fabrication specializes in welding of steel, stainless steel, iron and aluminum using MIG, TIG or Stick welding.

MIG Welding stands for “Metal Inert Gas” and is a fast and efficient arc welding process where a continuous solid wire electrode is fed through a welding gun and into the weld pool, joining the two base metals together. A shielding gas sent through the welding gun protects the weld pool from contamination. The MIG process can be used to create high-strength welds with great appearance with little need for sanding or cleaning. We can MIG weld on any metal surface and can weld sheet steel as thin as 26-gauge.

TIG Welding stands for “Tungsten Inert Gas” and is a more specialized and provides a clean, pure weld without the splatter, sparks for fumes. We use TIG welding for stainless steel, brass, aluminum, copper and nickel alloys. We also use TIG welding when quality of the finished weld is part of the final product and it needs to have either an artistic look or needs to be clean and smooth in areas where it is not possible to grind smooth. TIG welding provides the cleanest, most aesthetically pleasing work possible. The process provides us with a great deal of control over the weld, allowing for stronger, higher quality welds.

Stick Welding stands for “Shielded Metal Arc” and is the simplest and most cost efficient form of welding that we offer. Stick welding is fairly versatile as it can be used to weld iron, steel, aluminum, nickel and copper alloys. It can also be performed outdoors or in windy conditions. This is the preferred welding method for jobs that need to be performed in the field, such as for machinery repairs. As such Stick welding has the ability to create an effective bond on rusty or unclean surfaces. Additionally, unlike MIG and TIG processes, no shielding gas is needed because the flux coating on the electrode disintegrates durning the process, emitting vapors that protect the weld from contamination.

What Types Of Welding Projects Do You Specialize In?

We specialize in welding for both industrial, commercial, automotive, and residential industries. Our 5000 sq/ft shop gives us the ability to fabricate a wide variety of projects. No job is too large or small. We employ both a full and part-time team of welders that have a combined 20+ years of experience in all industries.
